Your 2012 National Hockey Lockout Thread

I think Bettman tells the owners he can crush the players and make them crawl back and he is keeping a deal from getting done with this mindset.

But what happens if it backfires? What happens if this happens?

Just replace Mr.Burns with Gary Bettman and the ant with the NHLPA.

The Catch of the Day!

Nothing to do with the lockout, and also not sure if it's been mentioned, but Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch has submitted a proposal for a new arena in the downtown core with 3 possible sites: 2 blocks west of Comerica Park behind the Fox Theater; kitty-corner to Comerica park across the Fisher Freeway; adjacent to Motor City Casino west of the downtown core.

Obviously has a long way to go, but the Pistons would most surely be a tenant as well. I love Joe Louis for it's intimacy and old-schoolness, and I also love the Palace, just hate the location. This would be nice. Most likely site in my opinion would be that massive empty space directly behind the Fox.

"They and the fans and the media need to realize that Bettman is doing his job and fulfilling his responsibility to the owners, just like (NHLPA executive director) Don (Fehr) is to the players. The players need to respect and understand that. Don't go bad-mouthing Bettman like that."

Yep.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

I still have mixed feelings about the lockout.

That's dumb. You should have one feeling about the lockout.

1. Yes it is bad, and it sucks there is no NHL going on right now.

End it here. This is where it stops. It absolutely sucks there's no NHL going on.

2. Yes it is good, maybe there will be a better product or league for us to watch in a couple of years that won't have this crap going on.... I miss the good ole days when you could watch all the NHL games you wanted. A lot of people don't have NBC Sports Network, and on top of that not showing 2 of the Stanley Cup games on national tv is a disgrace to all NHL fans in the US.

Ugh. Dude. It is not good. There will be no good coming out of this lockout. The product was good already and doesn't need any fixing that requires a lockout the way the sport needed 2004. And the lockout is not going to solve their television problem. If anything, a year-long lockout AGAIN will do irreparable harm to their already low television ratings (*whisper which is why the first few games of the finals are on NBCSN whisper*)

Also, I have no idea what you're talking about - "I miss the good ole days when you could watch all the NHL games you wanted" - Unless you have a Center Ice subscription, when was that? NBCSN shows more games than ESPN ever did, they have better coverage than ESPN ever did, and they show more teams than ESPN ever did. Also there's the NHL network and online coverage. As far as I'm concerned, last year was the best time there's ever been to be a hockey fan.

There's is no good. At least not for the reasons you cited.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hadn't the NHL had better ratings since the 2004 lockout? I just got into the sport a couple years ago, but I was talking to my uncle who's a huge hockeyhead and he was telling me about how ratings had skyrocketed recently. I'm not saying that sohiosportsfreak is right when he says that the lockout is "good", I'm just curious as to where the NHL stood before and after the lockout from 8 years ago.

My thought is that ratings peaked for the 1994 Cup Final, stabilized for the rest of the 1990s, but then crashed prior to the 2005 lockout (mainly because of the fall of offense from the trap game everyone adopted). For the first 3 years post-lockout, ratings were from stagnant to decline (especially the disastrous 2007 Cup Final; lower ratings than Cosby Show reruns).

It didn't get interesting until Game 7 of 2009; I think there is where ratings began to climb (along with the popularity of the Winter Classic).

Use to be in the early to mid 90's you could watch 3-4 games a weekend during the Playoffs. Now you are lucky to watch one. Maybe we could watch more if CBJ where in them, but that won't happen again anytime soon.

All I simply stated was that out of the lockout, I am hoping it makes them open their eyes and fix things.

The playoff were on NBC Sports Network, CNBC, and NHL Network every damn night. There were sometimes 4 games a night on. It's not the league's fault you don't want to pay for the sports tier of your cable package (or, in the case of Comcast, just basic cable).

Gary Bettman heard there was progress and decided he could not have that so like Mighty Mouse he shouted, Here I come to ruin the day.

Quite frankly, the exact same thing could be said for Don Fehr. Yeah, I'm gonna be 'that guy'. Deal with it.

Honestly this whole ordeal has felt like nothing more than a pissing contest between Bettman and Fehr. They've been too damned busy waging war against each other instead of, y'know, negotiating, and getting something worked out.

I'm done....

I've been trying to keep optimistic for weeks, months, but once again NHL, you dashed all our hopes AGAIN! I'm tired of this crap, I'm tired of the owners, I'm tired of the Players Union, I'm tired of Bettman, I'm tired of Fehr, I'm tired of the greed. Once your idiots finally get your brains working & get a deal done, call me back, until then, I expect the season to be cancelled. I'm just done.

Freakin morons. All of them, morons. :angered:

Then you are not done and they know that there are millions just like you, your eyes, and your money, who will return in one form or another when the league returns.

If the players had struck, I would place the blame with them. But I can't see any interpretation that results this being less than 100% the fault of the owners.

When the owners greet the expiration of every single CBA with a lockout, it's clear that they're not actually bargaining in good faith.

For chrissakes Jacobs, a shorter CBA means you can put the screws to the players even faster.
