LA Clippers New Logos & Uniforms?

The BuffaSlug was at least clever. It was a Buffalo and a sword, it simply came out looking like an abomination. It lived. it had soul. It had life within it, the heart of a living breathing logo was inside of it, and no matter how hard we all decried it for being the horror that it was, it breathed nonetheless. The OKC blob in no way represents thunder, storms, lightning, or anything derivative of a logical brand, but at least there's dynamic motion to it and above all else it's weird. There's this shield and odd arcing lines and a creepin-on-ya-bae basketball for some reason.

It's like the scene in Big Lebowski when Walter is stunned with the realization that the Germans haunting The Dude are in fact nihilists: "Say what you will about the tenets of national socialism, Dude. At least it's an ethos." At least the BuffaSlug and Thunder Badge were going for something. The Los Angeles Clippers 2015 brand is about nothing.

VE BELIEFT EN NUTTZINK! VE KUT OFFT YOUR CHONZON, LEBOHSKI!

It's a rectangle and some letters and some crappy hemispheres that were done for no reason. There was no goal here. This had all the heart and soul of a child trying to carve a dick into a tree trunk.

I agree with that. The Sabres were going for something and it just went off the rails in the creation process, but their intentions started off good. The Thunder were my previous worst and it's still bad especially when Thunder lends itself to a lot of great logo possibilities and they have fun colors and they use that instead. It's clear that OKC had a logo before they had a nickname and haven't developed a Thunder-specific logo since. But it's still preferable to the CLA logo because there's at least a reason it's bad.

What happened here is probably Ballmer saying "I just bought a basketball team so I have to rebrand it in my way. I spent 40 years in tech and have no design sense, just look at my courtside warddrobe, but everything else I've ever touched has turned to billions so I'm going to lead this design committee until I see something that I like."

I don't think the designer(s) started off by presenting :censored:. It's more likely they came to the team with some good ideas and someone without the eye for it pushed back until the Cuppers ended up with a logo that looks like it belongs on a reversible pinnie at a late 90's summer basketball camp*

*I can't take credit for this. It's borrowed from a tweet I saw, but can't remember the author. But I wholeheartedly agree. It's the best description of its amateurish appearance.

I just can't get over how unorganized this whole new "identity" is. Nothing about this rebrand looks like a cohesive, fully thought-out professional sports identity. The logo looks more suited for a business corporation than a sports team. The "CLA" logo is decent...except for the fact that it easily reads as "CLA" and not "LAC" in the first place. The white jersey looks like a knock-off. There are three (!!!) different jersey designs, which basically ruin any notion of consistency. Sure, there are some decent ideas used here, but there's at least one "decent" idea in just about anything. It's just that the entire package is so awful and poorly put-together, it totally overshadows the good. Individually there may be elements that could be considered better than other teams', but as a whole, there's nothing else on the major-league level that can even compare. Not the Buffaslug set, not the Thunder's set, not the Browns' look, not the 2000 Bills' set, nothing. That's what makes this a serious candidate for "WOAT" honors. And I don't make sweeping statements like that lightly.

Tradition is the foundation of innovation, and not the enemy.

Clippers is the worst of the 122 IMHO.

OKC is not good but that logo was designed without a name in mind and then they had success with it so now it's liked by the fanbase. I bet if they didn't have Durant and have sucked their entire time in OKC they have a new logo by now.

Nah, I'd say this Clippers logo is also abstract, stupid and ugly. They had a point, but they messed it up.

I don't think OKC is that bad. It's good for OKC basketball team. Is it good for the Thunder? No. But I think it's all right.

Here's what I mean by abstract - even if you take the worst logo of the set, the primary, in that primary logo of shape/wordmark/accent lines the lone geometric shape in the Clippers logo is a basketball.

What's this, a guitar pick?

1118px-Oklahoma_City_Thunder.svg.png

And what are those two lines for?

Forced perspective on the letters but absolutely nothing else, the bizarre shapes, the team name tacked on above without any sense of interacting with the rest of the design.

The Clippers logo is bad, but it's still not anywhere near this bad.

The Thunder's overall package might be salvaged by inoffensive uniforms, but if you're looking at logos alone there's really no comparison.

I agree with you that the Clippers' CLA logo by itself without the ball is better than the Thunder. However, the Thunder had less time to come up with their logo and unlike the Clippers, wouldn't have been able to say "screw it, let's wait another year." What I don't get is why the Thunder haven't changed their look since. People also seem disappointed by how the Clippers refuse to integrate any sort of boat in their brand which would give them a much more unique look, thus annotating the new logo as the worst ever.

I'm an OKC fan. I can't speak for all Thunder fans but I will say they still have the worst logo in the NBA. I cannot wait for a rebrand. The logo is atrocious for a number of reasons. The uniforms are actually decent, although I'm not a fan of the fauxback.

For those wondering about their cheesy marketing speak:

Bennett said the light blue color coincides with the state flag to represent the inclusion of all Oklahomans, the yellow refers to the sun and the reddish-orange color to the sunset. With the University of Oklahoma featuring crimson as its primary color, and Oklahoma State using orange, Bennett said it was "not too red and not too orange."

Using the colors of a sunset for a team named after the stormy weather that rips through the plains seems silly to me. And not only are they the wrong colors, there are just too many of them.

With all that said, I'll still take OKC's overall look over LAC's for the uniforms alone.

Here's a great concept where the basketball is shaped like a ship's wheel, and has a much better script. Not my concept...

This is what the logo would look like in their previous alternate colors, just because I really liked those colors. I did a quck paint job and made some modifications for fun...

I'm tired of the Lakers wannabe logo. The uniforms are the same despite the new logo and they stink! I would much rather have this!

I think every sane human being would prefer that.

Too bad Ballmer is not a sane human being.

It's a nice attempt at putting lipstick on a pig but there isn't enough adjustments to be made on the Clippers rebrand that can salvage it.
