Wow, they’re actually serious about this. I love the look of the new/old uniforms. Everything else about the Coyotes is a dysfunctional clown show and, again, I would sooner think placing them in a cornfield in Iowa is a viable solution compared to this.

I'd say put them in Charlottesville and appoint this fellow to GM the team from jail.

I'm sure Shane Doan also "recycled" specific bodily fluids.

May have already been discussed, but has the NHL actually said why they're so deadset on making it work in Arizona? They have no arena and minimal fan support. There would be practically nothing to lose by moving. There are plenty of cities that have an arena already ready and none could really do worse in terms of fan support.

at this point, I'm fully convinced the Coyotes are eventually just going to end up folding. that'll be a fantastic black eye for the NHL to have, since they seem to be hell-bent on accumulating as many as possible.

The NHL isn't going to fold a franchise. They obviously don't want a team in Quebec City, but if this new Tempe arena doesn't get approved it will probably end up being a Thrashers situation where they have no other choice. I'm sure Bettman would prefer Houston as the plan B, but there is no indication that anyone there is interested in owning a team.

Obviously neither one is ideal, but as far as temporary arena situations go, I'd take a brand new 5000 seat arena over a 10,000-13,000 dump that's 60 years old.

They have an ownership group that's committed to the market (for now), so Bettman isn't going to force a sale. The ownership group is heavily involved in sports betting, which has quickly become a big revenue driver for the league. Gambling has a large presence in the state of Arizona, with the DBacks, Suns, and Cardinals all opening up sportsbooks in their venues.

Greater Phoenix is also one of the largest television markets in the country. Considering how much ESPN/TNT just paid for the national rights, it wouldn't look great if they immediately pulled out of the market.

So now that this is the plan, I have a few questions… One, I saw on the article on NHL.com breaking this news, that Bettman said the Suns don’t want to share their arena with the Coyotes. Was there any other talk about this option? I’m not sure if I missed something, but I don’t remember hearing that the Coyotes even explored that option.

Another question  is about the timeline of the new arena itself. No not the new one that they’re hoping to build the new ASU one… According to the school’s website about the project, it’s supposed to be completed in December of 2022. So does this mean the Coyotes are starting a whole half season on the road? Or are they just going to not play in front of anyone until the building is done?

And what happens if Tempe says no?

December would only be about a month and a half after the season begins.  The Islanders played their first 9 games on the road prior to opening UBS Arena in late November.  It's not too far fetched.

Well the Islanders actually played 13 games before they opened at home, and 17 through the month of November.

Being ready in December of 2022 could mean the 1st, or it could mean the 20th or something. The Wild as an example, played 30 games this season through December 20th. Given that the whole world seems to be behind on everything, it’s fairly realistic to think that late December is a better timeline, which means what are the Coyotes supposed to do for 30 games?

It's not an option. The Suns control the arena and won't make it available. I'm not sure they still even have an ice plant.

It's been interesting, broadly speaking, to read r/hockey and see how not necessarily opposed the hockey internet is to this plan. It's remarkable. If they are against it, it's only to say the team should be in Houston instead, which, as we've discussed, would be the most important thing that has ever happened in the history of sports by giving an in-state rival to the Dallas Stars. Pro-Quebec sentiment is all but dead. I don't know how much of that is people who have just been browbeaten by "our precious alignment" talk and how much is pure spite for wrong-thinking Canadian fans; my guess is about 35/65. The new face of being a hockey elitist on the internet is to champion warm-weather suburbs where liberals move because they're the ones who are the best at posting. Hockey is for everyone who lives in Chandler or The Woodlands. It all leaves me feeling very passed by.

I remember when the Islanders left the abomination to the NHL that was Barclay's Center to go back to the "too small for the NHL Nassau Coliseum" and the uproar that came with it even from Bettman...but the Coyotes can play in a building with a capacity of 5,000.  OITGDNHL.
