It'd be nice to see the helmet under stadium lights or natural light. I wonder how noticeable those silver flakes will be. Right now they just look like overspray.

Since most white helmets have a silver flake I don’t think it will look much different. It won’t look like oregons glitter helmets from a few years ago

The synchronized movements were almost like an interpretive dance. Uniform reveals have come a long way. (Kind of.)

Remember that yellow heavy Cardinals' draft cap? Paris Johnson is wearing something else.

There were two versions of the draft hats, a grey one and a team colour one and they appear to be giving everyone the grey version. The yellow heavy one is the team colour one.

I thought their whole gimmick was reducing seams, not adding more and making them more prominent.  What was the problem that this new template was designed to solve?

My guess would be that the Vapor Untouchable was too simplified, which made it less flexible. This might just be an overcorrection from that.

Saw the new Vapor Fuse template on a Travis Kelce replica jersey at the Arrowhead Stadium Pro Shop this past weekend.

Hate it.

Was it the lower end fan jersey or the more expensive option?

I think it's that Nike wanted to spread that template out 3 years ago, and now that they have them ready to go they're making sure as many teams wear them as possible.  Oregon has worn them since 2018, and the only other teams to wear them as a whole since then were Ohio State, Georgia, and Michigan.

I don’t think it’s an issue with the existing template, it’s just that constant change is Nike’s plan. They change the template in a way that  identifies it as a Nike product (Flywire collar, Vapor Untouchable with minimal seams, now this new collar). I’m sure the template will change again in about five years time. Just the way it works. You see other manufacturers do the same thing (adidas with Techfit, Under Armour with the upper chest cutouts for their logo as well as a conference logo). Gone are the days of manufacturing generic templates that are basically the same from company to company. The template is what brands it as a Nike, adidas, or Under Armour product. We may not like it as fans of uniform design but I’m sure it’s smart from a business perspective because it adds more awareness to their brand.

Yeah, the template is just another brand identifier.  It serves the same basic function as the logo.  They can sell it as “better, faster, lighter, whatever” but if that was really what it was about, they probably could have just stopped with the old one. They need to keep giving the illusion that everything is new and improved, even if in reality, it’s only new and different.

After letting the dust settle on this reveal, I gotta say... they are growing on me. If there is a team in the league that should have very simplistic uniforms, it's the Cardinals. These are clean, i LOVE the white set, and if they mix the pants up (AKA lose the leotard look) with the red jersey, I think these are going to look really solid on the field. I've been against them adding black to their look since it was introduced in the last set, but even that one is a really balanced set. It'll be nice not to see the piping this year, and in reality, that's all I really wanted.

Sorry if I derailed the template discussion.

For the most part, I agree with this. I think the reaction to these as disasters was mostly borne out of surprise and the unmet expectations that they didn't do something more ambitious or risky.

But now that some time has passed, I can see myself warming up to these, but really only if they come to their senses and avoid the monochrome look, which seems unlikely.

That doesn't mean they're not flawed. The size of the home jersey chest wordmark is still comically too big. The use of gray/silver feels too subtle to me. It doesn't add anything to the look. I'd have preferred a black/navy tertiary color, especially on the sleeves of the white jersey.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Nike ends up unveiling simplified versions of the Vapor Fusion template later down the line, slowly evolving it to have fewer seams as they did with their evolution from Speed Machine to Mach Speed to Vapor Untouchable over the course of the 2010s. Wishful thinking, for sure, but it could always happen down the line. I hope so, as I can't stand how obvious and how plentiful the seams are on the Vapor Fusion. The Vapor Untouchable was just about as perfect as you could get: only a few, unintrusive seams on the whole uniform, barely even noticeable. Doesn't make sense to me why they changed it, especially given how much the new template messes up number size and wordmark spacing.

My grades (A-F) on  each of the the Arizona Cardinals uniform parts after more thought on them.

  • New white helmet = B - While I would've preferred a black or red facemask, the silver now ties into other parts of the uniform. Final thought = Upgrade from previous helmet.
  • New red jersey = D - While I love the TV numbers on the jersey, I am not a fan of ARIZONA across the chest and I believe the jersey needs stripes like the white & black jerseys. Final thought = Slight upgrade from previous jersey.
  • New red pants = F - There is not one thing I like about the plain red pants. They need to have stripes like the white & black pants. Final thought = Downgrade as I'd rather have the weird piping over plain.
  • Black Helmet = A  - Nothing new to say as I liked the introduction of the helmet last year. Final thought = Push
  • Black Jersey = B - I love the new black jersey, but wish they included the TV numbers. Final thought = Upgrade from previous jersey.
  • Black Pants = A - Love the pants and the stripes. Final thought = Upgrade from previous black pants.
  • White Jersey = B - I love the new white jersey, but wish they included the TV numbers. Final thought = Upgrade from previous jersey.
  • White Pants = A - Love the pants and the stripes. Final thought = Upgrade from previous white pants.
  • Socks = D - I would've loved to seen stripes on the socks. Final thought = Push
  • Monochome looks = I used to love monochrome uniform looks as they were not very popular, but now I am sick of them. So I hope the team doesn't go monochrome all the time and mix and matches moving forward.
    • I believe these would be their best combinations:
      • White/Red/White
      • White/White/White
      • Black/Black/White
      • Black/White/Black
    • I believe these would be their worst combinations:
      • White/Red/Red
      • Black/Black/Red
      • Black/White/Red
      • White/Red/Black

Overall Grade: B

The gripes with the template change are overblown, in my opinion. I would prefer they keep the current template, but in gameplay, the seams were hardly noticeable. My only issue is how it impacts contrasting collars that are not a solid color. We have seen this with the Bills retail jerseys and also on the new FSU jerseys.

The seams don’t bother me too much because the material is consistent and appear the same color throughout the garment. Compare that to a decade ago when different types of material were used. This was a real nightmare:

The new design is fine. If your team has a fairly standard collar, you probably won’t even notice a difference until the cameras zoom about five feet away from the player.

Edit - Realized this was the Cardinals thread. Feel free to move it to the general NFL thread if need be. Was just acknowledging the multiple posts above about the change in template.

If you want the 24-minute behind-the-scenes seams version of this rebranding process, here you go.

Pay particular attention to the remark made at the 2:25 timestamp regarding the alternates...
