I am surprised Warthogs hasn't got more discussion.  It ties into military, with the A-10 bomber plane, and the old Hogs nickname for the offensive line.  The alliteration works.  I like it better than Redwolves or Redtails.  And, the imbecile who trademarked all those names, trademarked "War Hogs", not the proper spelling of the name.

I was going to say that Warthogs are an ugly animal and it’s an ugly word. Couldn’t imagine selling merch with that. But if the IronPigs are making it work...

Washington Grays - if the Nats didn’t do it, why not the NFL club? Heck, I’d take Grays over Wizards.

I personally love the name but that would give Nike the opportunity to dress them in their proprietary shade of gray from head to toe.

Lehigh Valley can get away with it, being a minor league team.

I understand the hate for most of the Red[whatever] names as almost all of them sound absolutely minor league. But I really like the Redtails as a way of honoring the Tuskegee Airmen.

However, Ron Rivera has said that the new name will honor BOTH Natives AND the military. So the new name must be either Code Talkers or Wind Talkers unless Mr. Rivera is just talking out of his butt.

Sounds like Warriors to me

There have been conflicting reports about whether the new identity will have any indigenous imagery. Rivera was quoted in the first press release on July 3 as saying, "This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military." In that context, it sure sounds like he's talking about the name, but the "mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and the Military" could be carried out in other ways.

The second press release on July 13 doesn't mention anything about honoring indigenous people and the military, just that Snyder and Rivera are "working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years."

Yeah, I read that sentence and envision the missing words ... "in other ways," like through a dedicated foundation or financial contributions and related programming in support of Native Americans and military.

I can't imagine they'd go through this process and even consider for a second linking their brand to Native Americans again.

Navajo Nation Wants Code Talkers To Become Washington Redskins’ New Nickname

July 16, 2020 - 15:55 PM

Shortly after the Washington Redskins announced plans to retire their controversial nickname and logo, Navajo Nation president Jonathan Nez offered a suggestion that would honor both Native Americans and the United States Military.  “(This) is now a historic day for all Indigenous peoples around the world as the NFL’s Washington-based

What’s that mean? Is he being forced out?

i still find it silly that a coach is involved in the process as closely as Rivera has been. Does he have any previous association with the team before being hired as HC?  Or is he involved in a monumental decision with no sense of the team’s or city’s history and no background in branding?

It's Snyder, so Rivera's likely just a puppet to echo his own opinions. 😛

I question whether he’s actually involved, or if he’s just being trotted out as an executive because the general public doesn’t know the names or care about the branding specialists in the marketing department.

No NFL coach is worrying about color swatches this time of year. Especially in the COVID era throwing everything into uncertainty.

From what I understand since his hiring, he is essentially a co-GM with another guy and has control over most things dealing with the team. Something Snyder never let any other HC under his regime do.

And now I'll say something that may get me some heat...

"ahem"

The Washington Redskins are going to be just like the Houston Oilers in 20 years.... fondly remembered by all and missed daily.

Nah man. Houston oilers are missed for their awesome colors, not as much for the actual name. Washington’s gonna keep their colors so I don’t think theirs any real fondness for the name in 20 years. Probably more shame in it.

Excellent!

Agreed. The Oilers isn't really a great name and Washington, at least, is not losing its football team.

Not to pile on, but no, not really. I think we'll look back and be shocked the name lasted as long as did.
