The more you know!

I'm glad you got better.

The human body is a strange thing. Sometimes it falls out of an airplane and survives and others it falls slightly wrong from standing and dies.

This is good news. I guess. This honestly sounds just as scary. I thought it was odd that he looked like he got concussed despite there not being an obvious blow to the head, even in the slowmo video, but just figured brains are weird and things happen. In this case, bodies in general are weird and horrifying.

You can get a concussion without a blow to the head. That's why I'm not really buying the "pinched nerve" explanation. When Peyton Manning got a pinched nerve in his neck, he had to get surgery and missed an entire season. Meanwhile, Mahomes will be magically cleared to play next week like nothing happened.

Keep in mind that 610 Sports is the official sports station for the Chiefs. I'm going to go on a limb here and say its probably legit. Also, Carrington Harrison is great. Check out his YouTube page as it has snippets from his shows. Nick Wright is also a 610 alum fwiw.

Hopefully Mahomes is okay to go next week if he didn't actually suffer a concussion.

You really think KC would risk the health of their best quarterback in actual decades for one game that they might not even win with Mahomes? To quote @Red Comet;

The Chiefs still have all their other playmakers. Win, and you'll likely have Mahomes back by the Super Bowl. Lose and go at it again next year with a Mahomes who isn't risking becoming a vegetable. Frankly, making the AFC Championship Game at least satisfies the base expectation I had all year.

There's no risk to sitting Mahomes to ensure nothing serious does happen to him that could derail his career. Playing him if he's not in peak condition is not the optimal move. They keep Mahomes out for this one game, they can keep him around for the next decade for many more playoff runs and potential Super Bowl appearances. Play him in sub-optimal health and he ends up either making crucial errors or, depending on circumstance, getting :censored:ed up by another injury.

Also, dude was having clear as day balance issues. If he can't even walk to the locker room without aid and was having balance issues in locker room testing, no chance in hell he'd be able to run around a football field.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30736753/kansas-city-chiefs-coach-andy-reid-says-concussion-protocol-patrick-mahomes-returned

Quote

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday he didn't know whether Patrick Mahomes would clear the NFL's concussion protocol in time to play in next Sunday's AFC Championship Game.

But Reid indicated Mahomes may have felt well enough to have returned to Sunday's divisional round game.

After taking a hit and being knocked to the ground, Mahomes got up and momentarily staggered. He then headed for a brief exam in the sideline medical tent before bounding quickly down a set of steps and then running up the Arrowhead Stadium tunnel to the Chiefs' locker room.

"There was a chance back in the day that Patrick comes back in [the game],'' Reid said. "You saw him run up the tunnel. By the time he got to that point he was feeling pretty good. But there's a certain protocol you have to follow and that takes it out of the trainer's hand and the player's hand and the doctor's hand.''

Reid would have put him right back in if he could have.

I agree that he shouldn't play against the Bills. It's not worth risking a whole career's worth of greatness on just one game.

I'd like to believe that player safety will win out over the almighty dollar, but I'm just very skeptical that will happen because of the NFL's recent track record. Let's not forget that the refs ignored a clear and dangerous helmet-to-helmet hit that should have been a targeting call in the first half of that game. And earlier in the playoffs, there was that late hit by Jamal Adams that sent John Wolford to the hospital with a neck injury, also uncalled.

Whole lot of amateur doctors coming out of the woodwork.

To be fair, nobody actually knows what is going on save Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the physician monitoring Mahomes. Even a licensed physician that isn't connected to the Chiefs can't really tell you more than what we've all said. It's all a game time decision. Let's see what happens.

I'm not a doctor, but my father's one. I won't get into details but...

A pro team came to him once when I was in high school. A player on that team had a medical issue related to my dad's speciality. They asked him to look him over and determine whether or not he was healthy enough to play in an upcoming game.

My dad said "no, he absolutely should not play."

The team then went to another doctor who gave the player the green light. The player played.

Point is that if a team wants the player to play then they will play. And they WILL find a doctor willing to sign off on it. Even if it's detrimental to the player's long-term health.

Did you see Mahomes barely get back up during the game? I'm not a doctor, absolutely, but I know when things look terrible. That looked terrible.

When your superstar player is so out of it he can't even walk off the field without two people supporting him after struggling to even get to his feet to begin with, you're not putting that person back in for the next game. Better to keep Mahomes as healthy as possible for the next season than rush him back and potentially screw up your franchise QB.

You can always make another Championship game next season. You can't replace Mahomes as the franchise cornerstone. The Chiefs didn't give Mahomes that massive contract because they want to rush him back from a potentially serious injury.

I don’t trust a team led by Andy Reid to do the right thing, if that means losing a game.

Football people are, by and large, meatheads. We see Mahomes as potentially the next RG3; football players/coaches see a guy that WANTS TO PLAY!!! and they imagine the next "Brett Favre throwing 75 touchdowns the game after his father died" story.

So we can also place the burden of blame on you if your Bucs go to the Super Bowl?

If this year has taught me anything, it’s just how easy it was to sell out my convictions. Blame away, I have no shame left. Honestly, probably never did!
