College athletics identity changes

The trolling worked perfectly. Now things like this Nebraska logo will change and people can express outrage at how meaningless things change. It really is brilliant. People also flash it as a white power sign and there's just enough plausible deniability, enabling them to say "gawd, now the Nebraska logo? Are they just going to cancel everything now?" I don't actually know what 4-chan is...I've always suspected it was actually used as a white power signal with the added benefits of ambiguity, plausible deniability, and (most importantly) trolling.

"These adults are playing the circle game."

As an aside, I think the #1 looks better than the "OK," anyway.

Vanderbilt has unveiled a new university-wide brand identity, replacing the StarV unveiled in 2008 and AcornV used academically. It's definitely a different direction than what they have used recently, so I'm saving my thoughts until I see it in action. The new logo will be used on athletics uniforms starting in 2023.

Edit: Nevermind, this is terrible.

I like it. It feels distinguished yet classy, perfect for an academically rich yet historical school like Vanderbilt. The new V icon is nice, though a tad on the generic side and maybe too similar to Virginia, but it works better than a basic blocky V.  The Star V is solid, nothing spectacular, but it achieves what it's going for without detracting too much from the new distinguished style.  I hope the Star V will end up being the primary logo for the athletic teams. The new shade of gold is an upgrade, the previous one felt way to bland and flat, almost khaki-like. Overall, it's nothing spectacular, but it's a serviceable rebrand for a school in need of a refresh. Hopefully they'll update the uniforms to match.

Vanderbilt evolving to a bevel? The conference mates in College Station must have served as inspiration.

Nope, that might just be the institutional mark. But, what do we get instead for athletics? Gradients!

I hate this. It's always been the "bellissimo!" or "okay" sign. Why are they giving this tiny group of losers validation by acknowledging their hijacking of a perfectly fine and harmless hand sign?

Where was the outrage when the Bloods starting using that hand sign?

Didn’t you know? The Bloods are a white supremacist group. /s

The bevel on the athletics logo, without the star, would be way, way to similar to the updated UVA “V-Sabre,” but the gradient is amateurish. Per Vandy’s website the “Star V” is only a secondary logo so we may see the gradient V on helmets. If so, yuck.

Is the “Star V” logo being retired?

Vanderbilt is elevating the new “Block V” as its primary athletics logo. An updated version of the “Star V” also will be available for use by teams and on merchandise.

Yikes. The academic mark is fine, but the athletics application is going to cause tons of issues. It's making me think of the Georgia Force rebrand when they lost their rights to the original logo, and that is still in my opinion one of the worst rebrands of all time. Not great.

The V-star would be better if the star's stroke was the same width throughout.

A lot of newer sports-related logos seem to be incorporating gradients...seems to be trending...

Vandy talking a sh1tton of crap on twitter over the rebrand. Why? Because it's a simplistic letter with a gradient and a bevel? And it's not like their previous logo wasn't a century old.

I hope the university doesn't cave and revert back.

Now we're talking Vandy. No standalone V, no weird star that the V is breaking out of, this.

I actually like the new V-star logo, awkward 😂

This one doesn’t actually look better to me, it just seems to make the “V” look extra squatty.

I kind of love the slobbering windswept dog head in the bottom middle. Wish they would've used it.

Thought 1: there's already one major Bulldog team put there that uses red and black.

Thought 2: There's also only so many ways you can render one of the single most ubiquitous animal mascots out there.

Conclusion: they absolutely SMASHED this clear out the park out past the water...this is one of thr most unique renderings I've seen, and definitely one of the best bulldog marks anywhere.

(Varsity Partners cooked this one up, for anyone curious...same collective that gave us that stellar St. Peter's peacock logo and athletic brand identity.)

Spoiler

Bonus thought: how many other obscure little universities are there tucked into all those different backwoods and backwaters of North Carolina???

This rebrand is fantastic. I've got a couple of TINY nitpicks.

  • They should've designed left-facing marks as well. That way you could have the bulldog face forward on both sides of the football helmet. As it stands, I have a sinking feeling that they'll go asymmetrical (probably numbers on the left), and asymmetrical helmets need to die.Football_Lids-750x422.png
  • The territorial mark is not centered on the football field. Notice it goes from the 22 on the left to the 28 on the right. They should've centered it on the 25's.3-750x423.png

Other than that, they really took the ball and... ran home with it.

Agreed on both counts, especially the left-facing marks. I do think they did actually center the field logo - just on the bulldog and not the state, and the bulldog isn't centered within the state in the logo.
