This just appeared on the M's MLB shop:

Needs piping to match the three other jerseys.

Not necessarily. Since this is an alternat, I'm cool with no piping,

Looks like a BP jersey.

Yes. Alternate jerseys have to have some kind of piping or striping to distinguish them from BP jerseys, and these aren't very good for that reason.

and also these have the two sleeve patches. I agree though that they would be better with piping. However it's basically the old navy alternate but with the Seattle script instead of Mariners, which is an upgrade if they're only going to wear these on the road.

I understand what you're saying and maybe its gotten to that point but thats so backwards. Its Majestics perogative to make sure there's someing different about the BP jerseys to make sure they're not completely superflous. I dont think we should start letting BP designs dictate the way we design alternates. The colored alts are all similar enough, if we're going to make them all the same with piping to the point that its essentially paint by number thats when they become templated like the BPs.

But all 3 of their other jerseys have the same piping, that it just stands out in a bad way when one doesn't, like the Braves navy alts. And the BP feel is due to how they looked before the standardized panel and other decorations, back when teams had their own individual designs. A lot were just plain mesh jerseys and pipingless jerseys, unless their regular jerseys are plain, just still look that way. Especially when their other jerseys DO feature piping.

When did Selig make that a rule?

You could argue that it has navy piping, and therefore is consistent (yeah, I know that's a stretch.)

I normally agree with your point that alts should have piping so that they look like gamers and not BPs, but I also think that 1) jersey piping should match pants piping (if the pants have piping), so these wouldn't look right with white or silver piping, and 2) sometimes piping (especially multi-colored) on colored jerseys actually makes them look more like walmart or "fashion" jerseys and less like gamers.

I think in this case it's fine, though I would be OK with some neck and sleeve trim.

Piping or no piping, I REALLY hope they ditch those crappy stylized numbers they've only been using for that specific alt.

The difference between this and your "Florida Gators" theory is that in that case, at least some striping is being shown. In this case there is absolutely nothing. When piping goes onto two different background colors, the color of the piping can be changed when a background is the same color. Usually, a reversal effect is desirable. Just like when teams in football with multiple colored striping, when one of the colors is used as a background, it gets switched out in the pattern, usually for white, to keep the desired striping effect. It still matches. Here, you would be making the jersey navy with white piping while the pants would be white with navy piping.

Seconded.

An experiment that failed miserably.

Thirded. They just look awful.

...And dropped the front piping. Looks really nice to me, kind of reminds me a little of their early-50's home set if it were to have sleeve piping and a tail on the script.

The opinions I express are mine, and mine only. If I am to express them, it is not to say you or anyone else is wrong, and certainly not to say that I am right.

Looks like the collar on the road alternate (blue) now matches the style of the collar on the road gray. Overall, it's an improvement in terms of consistency, but if that's what they're going for, then I'll never understand why they didn't fix the navy on the Wahoo hats.
