Tampa Bay Buccaneers Unveil New Uniforms

Boat logo seems to feature prominently in this teaser, but it strikes me as 1) a little too busy to be a primary logo, 2) too tall to work on a football helmet.

Of course, the teaser definitely doesn't mean the boat logo is moving to primary (or even part of the next identity). Still found it interesting it was included at all.

Whatever they decide, I hope they fix this.

Not a good sign.

I love how these teams will screw up their rebrand but act like it's awesome, and then once they redo it again in 5 years, they basically bash the previous design and talk about how simpler, more traditional uniforms are better. Classic.

The Uniform is dead! Long live the Uniform!

Tell me smart guy, how else is the boat supposed to sail backwards, huh?

A few things from what little we can get from the teaser...

The Bad

They seem to be sticking with some form of the current logo set.

They seem to be sticking with pewter despite Nike's inability or unwillingness to produce pewter fabric with a metallic sheen. So we're stuck with matte brown passing for pewter.

The Promising

Maybe it's just a result of the stencil, the current skull looks ok without the Terminator-esque metallic shading. I hope this is indicative of the direction they're going.

The emphasis on orange is nice. It (sadly) doesn't look like Bucco Bruce is coming back but a modernized version of that that emphasizes orange could be cool.

The pirate ship is a better logo than than too-clean-for-its-own-good jolly roger flag logo they currently use. The ship as a primary isn't the worst idea. It could even look great if they modified it in the right ways (like the above-mentioned removal of the metallic details to the skull).

Bucco Bruce has gone the way of the Sean Connery Pirates logo I'm afraid.

I think you could do a lot wiith the current helmets with a smaller logo, and a mostly red/white/orange uniform color scheme, that maybe has some limited pewter accents to tie in the helmet.

I’d think consciously or even subconsciously, you have feelings of the one and only win, what you were doing, watching big names like Lynch, Alstott, Barber, Sapp, Rice, Brooks, Gruden, Dungy, etc. you associate all that with their uniforms. It’s easy to forget Keyshawn and all the BS. Now you have terrible uniforms and terrible teams so you get kinda disgusted and all that’s associated with it.

I’m not sure how many teams won it with horrible uniforms. For example, teams like the cowboys, Steelers, packers have classic sets. Although I prefer the yellow-royal rams, their gold-navy wasn’t an eyesore or anything.

The Rams lost their only Super Bowl appearance in navy and gold. Their sole Super Bowl win came in royal and yellow, but the overhaul had already been designed and filed and everything by that point so they couldn’t stop it.

This is cleverly subtle. One could make several arguments from the contents of this video, but there isn’t enough evidence to really make that strong of a case for any of them.

The update is gonna suck, you guys. Trust me. This team has been disappointing in every conceivable way for almost 15 years now. They can’t go against that mission statement now.

So compiling the newspaper clip key words:

Uniform Effort

A Bold New era

Wait No Mo

Bucs New Uniforms

Hoisting New Colors

Return To Glory

A lot of this can be pretty generic, but the "Return to Glory" sticks to me.  I feel like this could either reference the orange creamsicle feel, or to the way they looked in their Super Bowl heyday.

Remind me again of the glory the Bucs experienced in the creamsicles.

How many of those non-traditional new Nike designs just failed miserably? Jags, Browns, Bucs.

Titans and Seahawks still have theirs. I kinda want to include the Jets, but not sure how much of that was Nike, as that design has kinda existed since the 90's in other leagues.

Titans are worse than the Jaguars, Browns and Buccaneers. This means three teams went to Nike after one shelf life and was like "Hey, these sucks, we regret everything." And yet the Titans still signed off on the biggest trainwreck of the bunch.

I am so terrified about the Falcons, but hoping that Arthur Blank's interest in fan feedback promoted a need to look more traditional.

they have been pretty solid overall, though each has at least one random element they don't need.
Think the Bucs. Browns and first Jags were the only full on fails. (though besides the two-toned helmet the 1st Jags redo was fine I thought.)
Dolphins was so bland, but they've done well tweaking it.

Based on some very quick research the same guy, Shandon Melvin, was responsible for the designs of all of these. He's also responsible for the awful new Super Bowl logo template.

Dude probably needs to be fired.
