We've already seen several teams switch out facemask colors or decals. To me that's just an unnecessary change. The Bills or Jets saying hey look at us how cool we switched from gray to white facemasks for one game! or the Chiefs wearing a gray facemask and calling it a throwback uniform.

On the flipside, some really great looks can come out of it too. I think this Denver fauxback from their colour rush where they were forced to switch the royal to navy  looks really, really good.

This should be the Broncos full time look. (keep the Navy from the current set as a throwback/alt and only keep the white pants with it.)

When did they wear this? I see a 100NFL patch, so 2019...but I don’t remember hearing about this

It's a photoshopped image of their color rush. At this size it's pretty well done, but pretty noticeable when enlarged.

I guess I'm in the minority. I would rather see throwback uniforms be as accurate as possible. The Bucco uniforms would never work with pewter helmets, the Browns uniforms don't make sense with orange helmets, the Packers uniforms shouldn't have yellow helmets, etc.

If a team wants to wear an alternate helmet for 2-3 games a year, who cares? We've already seen several teams switch out facemask colors or decals. To me that's just an unnecessary change. The Bills or Jets saying hey look at us how cool we switched from gray to white facemasks for one game! or the Chiefs wearing a gray facemask and calling it a throwback uniform.

In regards to the packers it depends on which throwback they're using, as the most recent throwback can technically be counted accurate as a 94 throwback.

I agree that throwback uniforms should be as accurate as possible including helmets. Where I disagree is teams having alternate helmets with their standard look. The helmet is the most identifiable marker on the uniform for the team brand. It's one thing to accurately replicate a complete look from the history of the team. It's a whole other thing to dilute the brand by wearing a random color helmet that is not the standard look for the team.

Someone mentioned some teams not being able to have a different color helmet as they've always worn just one. So what? Most of those teams like the Dolphins and Raiders and Chiefs know the equity of the color helmet they use or else they would have changed colors at some point in their history. If the dolphins wanted an orange or aqua helmet they would have changed the helmet color in one of the several uniform changes they've had in the last years.

No, it isn't right for the NBA because they have fewer uniform elements. If I turn on an NBA game and there's a team wearing blue, that shouldn't be the Milwaukee Bucks because that isn't a team color.

Guess what???

I figure that game against the Warriors rubbed you the wrong way too.  Honestly, when these two teams meet, the Bucks should not be the blue-clad team.  I don't wanna give the swoosh any ideas, otherwise I'd put another oddball scenario out there.

The absolute perfect Broncos uniform.

Eh, I'd rather they dress like winners.

...not chumps.

The Broncos' modern classic look should never change, as it looks amazing and has "been" the Broncos' aesthetic for nearly 25 years/multiple generations. No attempts to go back to the "Super Bowl Sacrificial Lamb" period, please.

Heck, just about every AFC Champ from 1984-1996 is wearing a better uniform at the moment.

You're crazy. Pretty much all the AFC Champs from that period looked better then not now.

Dolphins - Better then

Patriots - Better then

Broncos - Better then

Bengals - Better then

Bills - Personally like the Red helmets and no monochrome(white doesn't count unless your're going all white socks)  better, this one can be a push.

Chargers - Still feel like the Navy 88-06 set was the best they looked, still better than the current, current is just short of good.

Dolphins and Bengals (and Steelers), I'll give you. The Broncos got a modern classic set in 1997 and have thankfully kept it, the Pats have only had one good look (1993-94) and two decent ones (2001-19, present), the Bills ditched the awful red helmets (and monochrome is whatever - I'm not that much of a head-in-sand traditionalist), and the Chargers finally look good again (happy colors).

Let's all be clear - the "one helmet rule" was created by the NFL to avoid liability, full stop

Not quite. That’s what it’s evolved into and makes for a really good excuse (and maybe a valid one, too). But the original rule was a bit more complicated than that, and had a lot more to do with marketing than safety. I’m not saying safety wasn’t a part of it, but it wasn’t the primary reason until CTE. The one helmet rule predates the better understanding we now have of CTE by probably a decade, at least.

Your point about the mix-match chaos is 100% valid. BUT, I can think of a bunch of other teams that I would love a alternate helmet. For starters:

Rams (anything but their primary)

Cardinals (red helmet would be cool)

Titans (white)

Seahawks (gray)

Patriots

Buffalo (red)

And that's just off the top of my head.

My only hesitation is that I feel like the NFL helmet is sort of more sacred than the uniform. Maybe it was collecting them from the gumball machine when i was a kid or something. But it sort of takes away from how special they are if teams have more than one.

They don't need alternate helmets, they just need to pick the better ones, Bills in Red, Rams in classic, Titans in White, Seahawks in grey, Patriots... silver works... Cardinals can stay in white.

Alts suck for the most part, and the season is too short to be mixing and matching.  I literally stopped watching NCAA because of the nonsense, as I never knew who was playing who anytime I turned in on.  Brand identify matters.

The one helmet rule went into effect in 2013. Patriots wore throwbacks against the Jets in 2012.

Yeah, the one helmet rule isn't something archaic. It's very modern. We already know what the league looks like without it. There's throwbacks with accurate helmets, and no crazy extra uniforms. If they repeal that rule, there's no reason to believe every team is going to have 5 helmets.

In the 7 years since the one helmet rule was created the uniform rules have been bastardized to the point where teams can wear 11 different combos in 16 weeks.

I will say that safety was not a part of it as there is zero empirical evidence backing such a policy. This OHR was intended provide the media a meaningless factiod that they could amplify to he public because it was overly simplistic and made it sound like the league was taking head injuries very seriously. It's no different than setting up a fake initiative complete with website/branding etc. or saying you are committed to X cause because you dedicated an unknown % of proceeds. It's optics and nothing more.

Can you name a rule that's changed?

Teams are wearing more combos now largely because they have more pants and socks. That didn't happen because of a rule change.

No they haven't. Besides adding second alternate and increasing the amount of games both alternates can be worn to three, there haven't been any rule changes. The thing that has led to the massive increase in uniform combinations in the past decade was team realizing they could wear different pants and sock combinations. And neither of those are rule changes; the Bengals, Titans, and Falcons were all wearing multiple pants/sock combinations in the early to mid 2000s and teams jumped on that bandwagon progressively over time. In 2010, the Rams wore 7 different uniform combinations with only one throwback, and multiple teams had flirted with three different pants colors. I think what really set off the trend was the emergence of Oregon and the Seahawks as contenders in their mix-and-match Nike uniforms. Suddenly a lot more teams had three pants options where most had two prior.

Edit: Fouhy beat me to it
