What, exactly, is "the strong brand" associated with the team's current look? What thoughts/feelings does that brand evoke? Is it something a fan of the team wants to continue being associated with?

To me the biggest problem is not their strong brand now it is the almost certainty that the brand Nike puts out will be considerably worse.

All the teams they touched I would rate like this so far:

1. Minnesota Vikings - Slight Upgrade, not a big fan but overall it is better than what it replaced

2. Seattle Seahawks - Push, I was never a fan of their previous set & I really like some of the aspects but way too many inconsistencies on this one

3. Miami Dolphins - Downgrade in everything they changed from the previous set

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Downgrade in everything they changed from the previous set

5. Jacksonville Jaguars - Downgrade, Helmet is the worst thing I have seen in the NFL and the uniforms are slightly better than before but no where near the excellence of the 90s uniform

Looking at the stats say the Browns have about a 20% of looking better than they do now, 20% of looking the same, & 60% of looking worse or like a bunch of clowns.

The stats are not in their favor.

The odds are probably worse than that because the Browns currently have a good look. The Dolphins managed to downgrade from a muddled set and the Vikings upgraded in large part because the prior set was so bad.

In my opinion,

Vikings-upgrade, but go back to purple masks

Seahawks-lateral move, but fixed some minor issues

Dolphins-cleaned up a uniform with a simply classic upgrade

Jaguar-mix of upgrades and downgrades between various elements

Bucs-whiffed big time on a huge opportunity to upgrade and came away with a major downgrade

No, he's not mean or menacing, or any of the other things a "modern" logo is supposed to be, but for my money, this is still the best Browns logo I've run across. The Elf is whimsical and sometimes that's enough for a logo.

I really think Cleveland is going to try to own their orange, for several reasons.

The most pressing is that when you see a shot of First Energy Stadium from a bird's eye view on a cloudy day, it looks gloomy and depressing.

Some one said in the MLB thread that baseball alternates between eras where uniforms are either classic looking or very modern. I think the NFL alternates between dark and bright colors, and if you look at every change that Nike had made thus far with the exception being the Seahawks, they've gone bright and vibrant. Even Jacksonville had a teal alt.

The above coupled with the fact that Haslam is a Tennesee alum lead me to believe that the Browns new uniforms will be orange.

To me, Nike has improved every team except the massive failure with the Bucs uniforms. My only gripe with Nike is their horrible templates and how they seem to make at least one mistake on every uniform. I like Seattle's look but those weird silver bars on the front of the uniform look silly and are unnecessary. The Vikings are nearly perfect but I think a yellow THIN (not those weird toilet bowls) collar would look good. The Dolphins have a nice look now that is modern and clean with a nice number font (I think Nike has improved tons of number fonts so far), but that uniform needs a tad more orange as on TV, the orange hardly shows. The Jags had a great look to start with and then downgraded tremendously in 2009 to that weird salt/pepper piping horribleness. Their template isn't the worst right now but that helmet is pitiful and they should be a teal dominant team not a black dominant team. Those Bucs uniforms are pretty much unsalvageable. In a year or two, Nike has to completely revisit those.

I'd also like to say that Nike only has so much control over the uniform process. Here's how uniforms actually get changed.

1. Owner says he wants new uniforms.

2. In-house people throw out ideas while out of house designers make concepts for the team using some of the ideas from the owner and others with input.

3. Nike sees what the out of house people have made and makes their own concepts (2-3 to choose from usually) that fit what's already been done.

4. The owner either chooses them or tells them to go back to the drawing table.

Nike doesn't do this on their own is what I'm trying to say.

Agreed on the Vikings.

Disagree that the Seahawks was a lateral move. If Seattle has just ditched the monochrome blue and gone with with white pants at home, that set would have been a top five look. The all-white roads were one of my favorite road looks in the NFL. In my opinion, their current look is a significant downgrade.

Seattle_BL.jpg53cb8ff6-20e4-439c-9b49-c4262dcb1cf0.jpg

Disagree on the Dolphins. Miami ditched a great a look that at most needed a couple minor tweaks in favor of a uniform that looks like something a movie would use to try to look like an NFL team. It's boring.

If the Jags simply fixed the helmet and ditched the black pants, they'd have a really nice uniform set.

The Bucs? Well, that's probably the worst NFL uniform ever.

The Vikings may, just may be a 'push,' but in all the other cases you cite, the end result has been worse than what came before - a product of Nike doing what it can to make the pro football uniforms of the 2010's the equivalent of the bell bottom pants, tie-dying and loud colors of the early 1970's. 20 years from now, people will look at these and wonder "WTF were they thinking?"

The Bucs current look, the Bills recently discarded one, and the current looks of the Bengals, Jaguars, Dolphins, Cardinals, Falcons and Seahawks each represent new lows in their respective franchise histories where the team's on-field look is concerned. At least until Nike proceeds to screw them up even worse.

Most times the best change is no change, but where NFL teams are concerned I honestly think they feel such pressure due to the investment already made, they'll go ahead with it even though it's a bad move. Once a team begins looking into a potential change, wheels go in motion within the NFL which make the change inevitable. I think that's why we wind up with rebrands that are the uniform/helmet equivalent of this year's NFC South division champion: one which is simply the best of a bad group, rather than one worthy of advancement.

While I don't really hate any of the re-designs that Nike has done so far, I will say that I think Tampa is the team that tried too hard to please everyone and ended up with a lot of people hating the new look. Cleveland just seems to me like one of those teams that should keep something close to the classic look with some modern touches, similar to what the Vikings did.

I was a fan of the 2000s Browns' orange alternates and would love for them to bring some form of those back, but as alternates. You know what's even more unique than orange? Brown. The Browns are the only team in the NFL, nay, the big 4 leagues to wear brown. Other than putting your stamp on the team you own, why not own such a rarely-used color?

It might have to do with the fact that brown is by far the least popular colorway for sports merch. Obviously it's a popular color in the fashion world but seems to be pretty unpopular if you're trying to sell t's, caps, and hoodies in addition to jerseys. Navy and black seem to the the go to. colors which has become terribly stale.

I agree with all of this except for the part about the Seahawks. I'll never understand why so many people prefer the white pants with the blue jersey. They're one of the few teams that could really pull off the full monochrome look and IMO it was damn near perfect. The white pants always looked so out of place and I always thought they should've just ditched them completely.

But their current set is fine with me. I can't stand the team themselves, but the new uniform set is a nice update to the last look.

I am confident that more blue and red merchandise gets sold than brown! In other words, Browns and throwback Padres gear accounts for less merchandise sales than Yankees/Sixers/Bulls/Braves/Cavaliers/Cardinals/Red Sox/ Cubs combined.

Did you have to go to college to be able to make that kind of hypothesis?

Yes, but I'm sure Cleveland Browns fans are quite keen on buying brown gear.

I thought the blue Seahawks jersey was top 5 in the NFL (all time). But the mono destroyed it. I always thought that the 'Hawks should have had one pair of pants: dark blue to match the sleeves on the home home jersey.

Sure Nike does not do this on their own but there is now way Nike is not mainly responsible for their mess because it usually highlights the Nike Template.

My problem with your statement is you say Nike upgraded everyone so far but you also say they made mistakes. How can the Jags abomination be better than their last set the helmet is so awful & as much as people say their uniform is good now I just cant see it.

What is so good about the uniform it is simple fill in the colors that has no reason for doing it.

Does Nike actually design helmets? I've always figured that they designed the uniforms and someone in-house designed the helmets to match.

I personally love Seattle's rebrand. I do not like it, though, when they wear navy-navy-white. Their other combos are much better.

Minnesota is another one I really like except the inconsistent numbers. If the left numbers did not have the weird serif/spikes on them, then they would be better.

Miami is a lateral move for me. I do like the new colors and all, but the lack of striping on the jerseys kind of bugs me. Still looks decent though.

Jacksonville is a toughie. Solid black helmet = Yes, solid gold helmet = meh. I never noticed the weird striping on the shoulders until recently. Heck, overall, the only thing that bothers me is the helmet. If they were solid black, then I would like this set even more (I think everyone can agree). If the weird striping was removed, then it would be even better. However, they would begin to look like a generic college team with the colored sleeves/sleeve caps. Still would be better than what they have currently.

Tampa Bay.... oh boy. the before and after pics sum everything up.

The simple solution to this is to introduce somes shade of gray as an accent (just an accent) and then make tons of merch in it. You keep the brown on field, still sell brown jerseys (because people will buy jerseys anyway), but sell gray shirts, sweats, and whatever else. IMO I think that while you can always just make gray gear anyway, I think people would be more likely to get it if it was also an official team color.
